📜 A Rich History
Our journey started before World War II when Alf Maw sold coal by the bucketful using a horse and cart. Over the decades, the business expanded through generations, with Alf’s sons, grandsons, and extended family carrying on the trade.

During the miners’ strikes of the 70s and 80s, Stan Wallace was recognised as a Priority Merchant by the NCB and NUM, ensuring the elderly and vulnerable could still receive coal when no one else could deliver.

A Family Business Built on Tradition

Stan the Coal Man is a family-run business with deep roots in the North East, tracing back to before World War II. Our story began with my grandfather, Alf Maw, who started selling coal by the bucketful from a horse and cart. He later upgraded to a horse-drawn tip cart, delivering half-tonne loads and shovelling coal through backyard hatches.

His sons, Alf and Francis, followed in his footsteps, running their own coal rounds. Later, his other two sons, Jacky and Don, became hauliers for the National Coal Board (NCB), transporting bulk coal and miners’ supplies. Eventually, Alf’s two sons-in-law, Bobby and my father, Stan, joined the trade.
